    — You barely slept. Lie down. I'll call the nurse.

    — Everything's fine. I need... You know. I really feel good.

He walked up to Kakashi, smiling again, and there was a hazy enthusiasm lurking in his eyes, as if he hadn't been gutted half to death about ten hours ago.

    — Is the mission getting your adrenaline pumping again?

Instead of answering, Obito glanced briefly at the door, then reached for Kakashi, pulled his mask down, and paused with his thumb on his lower lip. He stepped closer—right up close—and rested his forehead on his shoulder.

Kakashi's insides shook. He closed his eyes in relief, as if the weight of his past had only just melted away: Obito's blood smeared across the rotten ground, the desperate smile on his lips as he was nearly pierced in the stomach by an enemy technique, and the cold, deathly fingers Kakashi clutched endlessly as he carried him on his back.

If Obito is alive and he, Kakashi, is next to him, then Kakashi will not think about anything else.

Luffy thinks that Nami has all the right in the world to be bitter, after everything she’s lost and all those long years alone, after ink on skin and broken promises behind shark teeth, but he can’t imagine it to be much fun. And when Nami is bitter (less often now, but still sometimes), Luffy just wants to be loud for her, scare away the bad feelings, swipe his tongue across the top of his teeth, try again, but Nami doesn’t want Luffy to sing. She doesn’t want the noise. Luffy doesn’t see what the problem with noise is, since Nami is not working on her maps. Nami is just sitting there being bitter, and bitter is Nami’s version of sad, all mixed up with anger, because nothing about Nami is ever just is.

And when Luffy tries to touch the tattoo on her arm, new ink over scar tissue, she slaps his hand.

He doesn’t have very many words, so he whines, “Nami!"

The round black eyes of Pan couldn’t force it from his consciousness, neither could Gohan’s half smile, nor his pure, endless mission to prove otherwise. He had no concept of evil, really, Gohan had embodied perseverance for the strangest of reasons, but all with a greater purpose, with a puppet master to blame. Cell, Buu, the androids. They had all arrived with a purpose to fulfil. The world hadn’t been plagued by genuine darkness for a good while. The Earth hadn’t seen blood for the sake of blood, it hadn’t endured famine because it was funny, it hadn’t rained down acid just to see how much of that precious human skin it would burn. This was the mission of evil; to hurt for no reason. To create a place where death was merciful and a quick death was unheard of. He’d said it once to one of the humans in his grasp.

“Please, you don’t have to do this”

    He’d hear.

    “But I do”

    He’d say.

(The crows fly higher and higher.)
