Summary
At twenty-five Samira Mohan gets drunk at the ACEP Scientific Assembly. Head full of dreams, in a city she doesn’t live in, a year before she starts her residency. Meets an older man who goes head to head with her on medical journals; talks outcomes and hail Mary’s and procedures performed in tents in the middle of gunfights. Feels alive, feels seen and lit up in a thousand ways that are extraordinary at the time (that she will remember, even years later, will wonder if she made up).
Samira Mohan takes a year out, has a baby. Reapplies for residencies closer to her mother, to her family. Keeps an eye out at every conference she ever attends for a man called Jack with salt and pepper curls and the kind of smile that has you believing in all the possibilities the world has to offer.
Never finds him.
At eighteen, Anika Mohan joins one of those DNA matching sites. Spits in a tube and wonders about the lives that might be out there waiting for her. Tugs on the red string of fate and hopes it answers.
