Jim Hopper had never had a son.
He didn’t know remotely how to approach it or what to do. He supposed that he had been their age once, and had experienced the adolescence of boyhood for himself. So, how hard could it really be?
The truth is hard. Especially when you're forced to amend your expectations getting to know a kid who's nothing like how you yourself grew up. Luckily, when you have someone willing to help bridge the gap it makes it a hell of a lot easier to understand.
(Hopper learning about Will through an awkward byler encounter!!! thank god for Joyce and her beautiful way with words!)

“She’s alive,” he mumbled to himself, barely noticing El cleaning the remaining blood from his face and sticking a bandage over the cut.
“Yes,” El agreed absently. “Lucas, I need your help.”
This is what finally caught Lucas’s attention, enough to fully draw him back to the present. El had never asked for his help before; he’d never imagined that she would ever need it. She quite literally had telekinetic superpowers, not to mention Mike’s unwavering support even after their breakup and Will’s steadfast presence as her adopted brother. What could Lucas possibly do?
“My…help?” he managed.
“I have an idea,” El said, stronger now, more firm. Something flickered in her eyes. Doubt, maybe, or perhaps fear. She continued anyway: “I think I know how to get her back, but I need you to help me.”

In the six months since Max fell victim to Vecna, Lucas notices changes in his friends' relationship, El piggybacks into Lucas's head and brings him into the mindscape with her to find Max, and they find her in the midst of her memories, safe from Vecna but unable to escape on her own.

“I’m sorry,” Steve said. “I tried to make her wait until you woke up, I really did.” He tossed something in Mike’s direction, which Mike caught without thinking. “Happy birthday, by the way.”
Mike blinked. He’d completely forgotten, between Holly going missing, frantically searching for a way to get her back, and being possessed by Vecna himself. “Uh, thanks,” he said awkwardly, running a hand through his hair and looking down at what Steve had tossed at him. It was a Kit Kat bar. His favorite. He wondered how Steve knew that.
“Oh, right!” Robin darted forward and hugged him before he could react. He met Will’s eyes over her shoulder, but Will still had a hand covering his mouth and his expression was unreadable, aside from the red on his cheeks. “Happy birthday! There’s a surprise waiting for you in the kitchen. Anyway—mind reading. Totally a thing now, right?”

Through "the power of best friendship," as Robin puts it, Mike and Will develop a telepathic connection when Vecna tries to take Mike. Neither of them are really upset by it, especially when it gives them the opportunity to finally destroy Vecna once and for all.

“Can I hug you?” he repeated, voice smaller now. He desperately hoped that Will would say yes.
He didn’t want to, but he held eye contact with Will for as long as it took Will to search his expression. For what, Mike didn’t know, but after a long moment, Will finally nodded. “Yeah, Mike, you can hug me.” And Mike didn’t hesitate to haul Will back to his feet so he could hug him properly, full-bodied and chest to chest.
“I’m so sorry, Will,” he murmured into Will’s hair. “I’m so sorry.”

In which Mike and El decide to end their relationship in favor of being friends, he punches Troy Walsh, and finally allows himself to feel what he feels for Will while they work on patching up their friendship so that maybe, someday, he can be brave enough to ask for more - not necessarily in that order. A bit of a prequel to the first fic in the series, though they can be read as standalones.
