“Do you know the hat rule, Rumi?”

An eyebrow arched high, “The hat rule?”

“The hat rule,” Zoey confirmed. There was a dramatic pause and Rumi was just about ready to whip out her phone and look it up herself before Zoey continued. “The hat rule used to just mean basic etiquette for wearing a stetson but now it basically means ‘if you wear a cowboy hat, you have to ride the cowboy. In your case, the cowgirl.”

Rumi blinked slowly, her brain not fully connecting or short-circuiting. She wasn’t sure which one, “I’m sorry…what?”

Zoey rolled her eyes and laughed.

“It means Mira just told every person in this arena to back the fuck off because you’re hers.”

“How much?” she asked, turning to Mira. “How much did he say he’d pay you?”

Mira couldn’t even begin to process what was happening. First, her manager’s son had cornered her on the street, offering money to sleep with her. Now, her CEO had suddenly appeared out of nowhere, asking a question that made no sense at all.

Thankfully, Abby finally released her wrist. He shoved both hands into his pockets with nonchalance, looking down at Rumi as if she were one of his drinking buddies.

“15 million. I’m never stingy when it comes to my women.”

Rumi rolled her eyes, the disgust clear on her face. She reached into her purse, took out a checkbook and a fountain pen, biting off the pen cap (Mira and Abby swore they were not thinking it seductive).

Rumi swiftly wrote something on the check, finishing it with a graceful signature before tearing it out and holding it out toward the pink-haired woman.
Mira almost gasped at the number written on it.

“50 million won. I’m buying her night for 50 million.”

She laughed, bitter and hollow. “Sardonic, isn’t it? Three people in a generation who can interact with the Honmoon, and one of them is defective.”

Silence again—but this one cracked differently. Rumi’s reply came sharp, like a blade drawn without hesitation.

“Don’t you dare talk about replacing yourself. Is that what you think?” Rumi asked, incredulous. “That we’ll just throw you away like yesterday’s practice gear because you’re hard to handle? Do you know how stupid that sounds? To me?”

    Summary

She told herself she’d wait until they didn’t need her anymore. Until they could perform without her. Until their lives were full enough that the hollow space where she should have been wouldn’t hurt as much.

And in the meantime, she played her part.
The perfect leader. The unshakable protector.
Smiling in the sun, laughing at their jokes, holding them close after a performance.

But sometimes, when she was sure no one could hear, Rumi would press her forehead to the cool window glass and whisper the truth into the night,

    “I’m not supposed to stay.”
