In 1944, Bucky Barnes fell off a train in Switzerland. When he wakes up, he's in Washington DC, it's 2014, and the war's over. Apparently they won, but not really, because HYDRA's still out there sinking flying ships into the city streets and putting the blame on him.
Also, there's a loaded Glock in the microwave oven, which Steve Rogers may or may not be planning to use on himself.
The future is insane.

“You don’t what? Cry?” Clint asked.
This felt like a test. Perhaps they were trying to see how mentally unstable their Captain was. Luckily, he could, in full honesty, reassure them that he was not weak. He had a strong lock on his emotions and hadn’t even cried once since he unfroze. He could operate at full capacity in this century despite not knowing what a ‘Rom-Com’ is.
“Not even once.”
Steve missed the furrowed brows, and concerned looks shot around the room. He tried his best to isolate himself in the Avengers Tower. If anyone could expose his vulnerability, it was this team. S.H.I.E.L.D. had been less of a threat because Fury was more than willing to believe whatever Steve told him as long as he got results. This team of super spies, geniuses, and gods? They had no reason to sit back and allow an incompetent and weak man to lead them. It was necessary to avoid allowing them to see the cracks in his armor, or they may bench him. If Steve got benched, there was nothing left for him in this century.
