He’s a Fixer, a sort of professional middle man. Everyone in a certain part of the city knows that if you want something - an object, a person, a legal document, a mystery solved or an obstacle removed - you go to him. He’s smart and fast and not afraid to get his hands dirty, and today he doesn’t have his hulking ogre of a boxer bodyguard with him. Probably he wants to go unnoticed… and he walked right into the tea shop, where the Lan guy is sitting.

"You know he moved out here because he was dying, too? He didn’t want me to watch another parent-figure waste away. I mean, I had to watch it happen anyway for a while, he didn’t really save me from anything…Xichen-ge and I didn’t even know if he survived the trip out here or if he’d collapsed somewhere in between, if he died where no one knew him or knew that we were waiting to hear from him. That was one of the worst things I think I’ve ever experienced, and the whole time I just wanted my brother to come back so I could have him around for as long as he was alive.”
Huaisang turns his head to face forward again, staring at the foothills they’re headed towards, the same ones Mingjue stares at every sunset from his spot on the front porch.
“The thing is, though…he was dying in New York. He’d been sick for a long time, and it wasn’t getting any better. He was killing himself to stay and take care of me. And then he came out here, and he lived, and I’ll never know if he would’ve gotten better if he’d just tried a little harder back home, or if the only thing that saved him was leaving it all behind to start over all the way out here. I guess it’s kind of useless to think about now, huh?”

Summary
In retrospect, Meng Yao can recognize that it was a foolish decision to make any kind of remark whatsoever in Wei Wuxian’s presence re: anyone with the surname Lan and sex. He’d mentioned — casually, off-handedly, completely nonchalantly — that Lan Xichen had expressed disappointment in his decision to work through heat season as per his usual, and now they’re twenty minutes in on a painfully thorough breakdown of Lan Wangji’s psychosexual patterns of behavior that have likely been caused by being brought up in a rigidly traditional method in every way imaginable, which Wei Wuxian apparently now sees fit to assign to Lan Xichen as well.
The worst part about it all is that he has a point, the absolute bastard.
“I mean all of the Lans have some weird repression shit going on, you know? It just depends on their personality as to how it shows up I think. I mean I’m pretty sure their uncle hasn’t taken a shit in 20 years his ass is so tight.”
God what Meng Yao wouldn’t give to rewind time before he was forced to consider Lan Qiren’s ass in any capacity whatsoever.
“Why, YaoYao? What’s up with you and Business Insider’s two most eligible alphas — trouble in paradise?”
Oh he has no fucking idea.

“What the fuck?” Wei Wuxian says out loud, and nearly jumps out of his skin at the deep, even timbre of what is definitely not his own voice.
He sits up, sparing a single thought to marvel that he can do so completely unaided and with no discomfort at all, and spots an all-too-familiar blade resting lengthwise across the opening of the tent at his feet. Bichen sits innocently in a single thin beam of sunlight, and Wei Wuxian covers his — Lan Wangji’s? — his-for-now eyes with both hands.

Summary
“You’ll manage, Bucky,” Gale says before he can think better of it, and when John looks up at him with eyes wet and glistening, he wishes he could take it back. Maybe not just the cold, then.
“I’ll manage?” He sounds level at least, hot drunk but no different to normal. A little edge, a little rasp.
“Without ‘im. I know it’ll be—But you’ll manage.” John’s answering scoff has a meanness in it, and he does look down again, but thankfully he doesn’t stop walking.
“I’ll manage. Yeah, I’ll manage. I’ll manage without him, because I managed before, that right?”
“That’s right.” Gale’s murmuring again, and you don’t grow up in Wyoming without learning how to soothe a horse, and somehow that’s the voice he’s using right now. Tempted, even, to soothe like he would a horse: hand rubbed broad along John’s flank, cupping his neck like he’d cupped Gale in the pub, rubbing solid and firm. Might quiet those jitters, still jittering even though John’s trudging along with his sight on the ground, trying to sniff away his wet eyes.

Summary
“Still no better singer than I am a dancer.”
“I’m tryin’ to teach you,” John says.
All humour dies in Gale’s throat as John begins to move. He changes position, tucking one arm beneath Gale’s neck, and with his other hand he pulls him closer by his waist. With John’s thigh still between his, Gale can feel the contours of his hips against his own. The thin layers of cotton pyjamas separating them are not enough.
“Then just sway a bit. Like this.”

Summary
When Gale smashes a backhand, and Egan lunges for it, but the quick bounce spins it just past his racket, he stumbles, catches himself on his hands with his racket clattering against the hard court, and he starts laughing, wet and winded—laughing still as he straightens up, cheeks reddened, glistening under the sun. He scrubs the back of his wrist, his black sweatband, over his forehead.
“See? You love it when I make your dad mad.”
“Egan,” Gale warns, but all the authority is lost in his panting. Egan wipes his forehead again, racket tapping his thigh.
“Missed playing with you, Buck.”
“We played two weeks ago, in Cincinnati. C’mon, still your serve.”

Gale meets John Egan at a Challenger in Bordeaux when they're both 19 years old. After that, he can't seem to shake him. But what's more is, despite what his dad says about Gale's game, and what the commentators say about their rivalry, and what he's been told about tennis his whole life, Gale doesn't think he wants to.
