Summary
I am sitting here now every part a helpless spectator of the scene that surrounds me. I'm watching with glazed-over eyes as the others are captured and forced off the stage blindly. I can see Mikey get just a few steps into the wings of the stage before he's tackled to the floor in a pile of angry screams that fade into gagged whimpers as a pair of soldiers tie back his arms and force him to stand against the wall with Frank and Ray. They glance over at me from over their shoulders occasionally. There's nothing I can do to show them that I'm looking back.
I'm baring my guts for the audience to see. My black undershirt is torn where the knife was plunged into my chest. The fabric is quickly saturated with blood. First it spurts in time with my heartbeat, then it slows to a steady pace. The crowd stares and I cannot stare back. The wound is crying blood because I cannot.

"Oh, fuck, we are so dead," Kobra comments unhelpfully. Party jabs him in the side. The Phoenix Witch is only a few yards away from them, now. She pushes her cart ever closer and they can all see the collection of masks inside it, a jumbled collection of every color and texture you can get your hands on out in the desert. They all turn to stare at each other for a second before she's suddenly too close to focus on anything else. "Um," Kobra starts, apparently deciding that now is a great time to elect himself as the official gang diplomat, "are we dead?" Jet watches how Party's hands tighten in a strangling motion in their lap.
The Witch continues past them, pushing her cart through the gap between Party and Kobra. "Not yet," she answers. "You will be soon, though." Kobra gasps and Ghoul makes a sound like a choking animal.

Summary
It was like one of Spears's cost-benefit analyses. If his hypothetical confession was reciprocated then Eric would get his dream for however long they had left before it was ripped away and Alan would have to die guilty knowing he was leaving the other man to grieve him for eternity. Worse, though, was the possibility of Alan rejecting him. He would be forced to live out the remainder of his life with the uncomfortable knowledge that his mentor-caretaker had been harboring romantic feelings for him and, knowing Alan, the guilt of having to reject someone he had been close to. There was no correct answer except to do nothing and wait because anything else would end in guilt and grief for them both. There was no correct answer because Alan was dying and Eric couldn’t do anything to stop it.
