Strangely it was Jonathan that noticed first months ago, by watching from a distance when picking up Will, or dropping him off. Noticing the small concealed flinches, or tense shoulders whenever someone was too close, too loud, had a hand held too high.
Will was next, likely due to Jonathan probing him, questioning about who the red headed girl that was now hanging around with them was.
She was truly thankful to them both now.

It had been three weeks since the Gates opened in Hawkins, yet Vecna’s army was nowhere to be found. Dustin theorized that Vecna’s weakened state was forcing him to hold off starting Armageddon. After all, what good was an army if there was no strong leader to guide it? It was a waiting game, then. For three weeks Lucas sat at Max’s bedside, and with no word from the doctors on when (not if, he told himself, when) she would wake, he couldn’t help but wonder if he’d be waiting forever. And then, like some higher power had heard his silent pleas, Max awoke. But this was Hawkins, and catching a break was a laughable concept. So when Max did wake… she was different.

Mike’s jittery foot-taps started just as he replied, “Did you eat breakfast?”
“What?” Max blinked, then glared. “How is that any of your business?”
For a moment, she was sure Mike would glare in return, say something fiery or insulting or mocking then they’d both go back to how things were – ignoring each other until interaction was absolutely necessary.
But that didn’t happen.
Grief can cause distance between close friends and bring closer the distant ones.
Max should’ve known that Mike Wheeler can’t help but meddle with her business. But as their reluctant friendship blossoms into profound understanding, Max is amazed at how much they have in common and how much this friendship feels like something she can enjoy, instead of something she has to endure.
