Summary
Anna Williams has managed to keep her daughter safe in the Boston QZ for fourteen years. Their life is far from perfect, but it’s theirs. In the haze of anger and depression from having her dreams ripped away from her when her life was just getting started, she found her purpose: Ellie.
But now the woman who she thought was her best friend is threatening their safety. Anna makes the rash and necessary decision to leave Boston. As they make their way through Massachusetts, Anna and Ellie run into another parent/daughter duo heading West: Joel and Sarah Miller.
Anna and Joel despise each other right out of the gate, but they share a common goal and need each other to accomplish it. Anna can provide the Millers with medical care thanks to her training and Joel can provide muscle that Anna begrudgingly admits will be necessary at some point. Still, tensions escalate almost every stop of the way along with some unexpected feelings that rise to the surface.
Through their desperate effort to save their reasons for breathing, Anna and Joel discover another type of love they didn’t think they were capable of.

He joined her, much to her surprise – slowly, struggling with his boots far more than she had with her tennis shoes, taking the time to actually roll his jeans up to his knees before he waded into the water and stood next to her – and she snorted back a laugh when she saw this, had to resist the urge to point out how stupid he looked, because when she looked up at his face to tell him exactly that, there was so much fondness etched across those aging features that she just couldn’t bring herself to do it; couldn’t bring herself to be cruel, even jokingly so, to the one person she could always count on to look at her just like that.

As much as he is intrigued by her, Daisy also can't help but fall for the grumpy man who refuses to meet her stare and accept her help. But Daisy is nothing if not stubborn and she will make Joel Miller like her, even if it kills her.
