It wasn’t supposed to end like that. They both assumed that with their line of work, they’d be up on a funeral pyre at some point – but it wasn’t something either of them wanted. It wasn’t something they had hoped for. Sam at least, never hoped. Dean… Well, Dean assumed and never really gave it a thought that he might end up outliving his baby brother, or living to see retirement. He never put much stock in hopes.
Maybe he should start.
