Summary
Eddie has decided it’s time to find out what joy looks like to him.
Swearing off dating, he pours his energy into adoption papers, therapy, and late-night study hours to get certified as a paramedic.
Buck is trying to move forward too. He’s dating beautiful Camila, who seems like an ideal fit. Something about her dark hair, sharp canines, and competence as a nurse feels easy.
But between grief, tequila, and a newborn who refuses to sleep, moving forward starts to look like something else.
“Lizzie, meet Evan Phillip Buckley. We call him Buck. And Buck, meet Elizabeth Joy Diaz. We call her Lizzie.”
At the sound of her dad’s voice, Lizzie blinks, wide-eyed. Her eyes are large and still a pale shade of gray.
“Elizabeth Joy?” Buck asks.
“Yeah. She’s gonna hate it, isn’t she?”
Buck stifles a laugh. “If she has any taste.”
“So you don’t like it?”
Buck rolls his eyes, but his smile is wide and genuine, lighting up his whole face.
“I love it, Eddie. It’s perfect.” He turns his gaze back to the baby. So small, so soft. She looks impossibly fragile, yet perfectly safe and content in Eddie’s arms. “She’s perfect.”

Summary
“My mom said, uh, that his name was Buck. That he was going to go to the fire academy and that he had a—” she broke off, rubbing her own forehead, exactly where his skin went pink. “She said he went by Firehose.”
Buck didn’t need all of his coworkers to look at him in alarm; he was pretty sure he’d gone deadly pale. His daughter knew four things about him, and one of them was his old tinder profile handle. He felt a little like he was going to die.
“She’s got your eyes,” Eddie commented, unhelpfully.
----
Buck finds out he has a daughter, and also a stupidly big crush on his best friend. It's an adjustment.

Summary
After a pause, Eddie asked, “You ever think about just… keeping it going?”
Buck blinked. “What, like living together forever?”
A snort filled the air, and Eddie looked half amused and half serious. “I dunno, maybe? Something like that. I mean, look, it’s a new year, right? Anything could happen. But neither of us wanna be alone forever. So, maybe if we’re both still single in a year or whatever, we could just—” he waved a hand vaguely, like he was lassoing the future— ”make it official.”
“Official?” he echoed, head even fuzzier now.
Eddie’s mouth twitched. “Yeah, we could just get married, or something close enough to it."
Buck’s heart tripped over itself.
On New Year's Eve, Buck and Eddie made a drunken pact: if they were both still single in a year, they'd marry each other. They didn't mean to start sabotaging the other's love life to make it happen, but somewhere along the way, that's exactly what they ended up doing.
Now the only question is... how far are they willing to take it?

Summary
“Well, I get the sense that it… you know. Bounced onto you.”
Buck goes still.
His brain becomes static as he processes Erin’s words. What they mean.
Finally, “You’re saying you’ve cursed me.”
“I think so.”
“To not be able to come.”
“I think so.”
Buck opens and closes his mouth a couple of times. “What!?”
Or: Buck gets cursed.

Summary
He broke Buck’s heart.
He knows it. Knows it like he knows the weight of his own turnout gear, like he knows the precise way to steady himself when the ground gives way beneath him. It’s a fact, a simple and devastating truth that follows him everywhere, no matter how much distance he puts between them.
What happened in that bathroom, Buck pushing him against the door, kissing him like it was the only way to make sure it had been real, that wasn’t some desperate attempt to get Eddie to come back. It wasn’t even about convincing Eddie to be with him, not really. It was Buck needing to know, to feel it, to confirm that Eddie had been there, that Eddie had wanted it, that it hadn’t all been some fever dream conjured up by his hopelessly romantic, self destructive heart.
And, maybe, just a little, it was about hurting Eddie because Eddie hurt him first. Which, God, isn’t that just heartbreaking?
Or; Eddie and Buck have sex the night before he moves back to El Paso for good.
Each chapter follows a year in Eddie’s life as he makes his way back to Buck.
