The comics confirm that Master Piandao trained Zuko in swordplay. But we know from the show that Sokka's master is very picky about who he trains. Titles and authority mean nothing to a man who can kick your butt with his eyes closed.
So how does a royal prince convince a picky master to teach him to stab things?
He doesn't.
Or: Zuko breaks into an old man's house and nearly gets murdered.

The spirits have a terrible sense of humor and Zuko is the butt of the joke. Now only about 8 inches tall, Zuko is determined to prove he's not a failure. If he can just figure out how to regain his size, take the Avatar captive, and get back to Uncle in one piece, he'll finally regain his honor.

Ultimately, Zuko started off his banishment as a thirteen year-old child who had just been severely traumatized. This is a collection of stories revolving around the idea that Zuko's crew, a bunch of full-grown adults, would absolutely see him and immediately feel an overwhelming urge to nurture this poor kid.

Summary
It was the kind of thing that happened in folktales: a cursed prince, a transformation that could not be broken. Except those princes usually became monstrous-looking creatures who needed true love's kiss to return to normal. They did not get stuck as a six-year-old boy depending on a bald runt and two Water Tribe siblings.

I loved this. Zuko is de-aged in body only, but he runs with it, and meanwhile, comes to actually LIKE the GAang. Many lessons are learned, from both humans and spirits. Uncle Iroh remains a teapot for most of the journey.
