Summary
Wei Ying asks about the scar. Shaking loose the tendrils of his fragile heart, Lan Zhan tells him.
Excerpt:
" "Why'd you do it?"
His words are slurred, but Lan Wangji hears them nonetheless. He looks down, where Wei Wuxian is laying on his chest, naked skin against naked skin, and doesn't know what to say. His lover traces the scar on his chest, fingers like dandelions in the wind, as he waits for him to say something.
Lan Wangji stays silent.
"I know I said you don't have to say why - and, you don't, I just..." he exhales, breath shaky. "I hate seeing you hurt. And I don't..."
He stops, lips pursed. Lan Wangji stays quiet, contemplating.
He wants to say he doesn't know. He wants to say he doesn't know why he did it, that it was irrational, that it wasn't him, not really, that made the decision. And the last part would be true, in a way.
But the rest would be a lie. And lying is forbitten.
"I think, ", he starts slowly, tasting the words in his mouth, "I was.... Sad."
The word tastes sour on his tongue.
He tries again.
"Mourning."
He says it and there's no going back. "
