Steve was panting, sweat dripping down his face as he ran laps in the blistering summer heat. The school track was mostly deserted this time, the darkening sky doing nothing to relieve the day's humidity. Feet aching, heart pounding, Steve loved the rush that came from running.
He’d already done several laps, the burn starting to become uncomfortable as he neared the school again. As he passed the bleachers, the wind began blowing in his face, and although it was refreshing, it also made his pace falter.
Freshly cut grass, the smell of the woods…
Steve could feel his teeth sharpening, aching to bite, and he glanced around as he slowed to a stop at the dirt line. The scent was starting to fade, so he began running back up the track in the opposite direction, following the scent now. It was coming from behind the bleachers, and as he rounded the end, he found Eddie Munson smoking beneath them.
Eddie jumped at his sudden appearance, and the tantalizing scent soured. “Harrington?”
