But words, in Newt’s experience, were dangerous. And when everyone started asking him how he was more often, after his parents divorce, and then after he broke his leg in a suicide attempt they had managed to cover up as an accident, Newt just decided to stop responding.

When Thomas is 4 years old he learns really quickly what being smart means. It doesn’t mean being able to do multiplication despite his young age, oh no, being smart means knowing when your mother's high again so you don’t set her off, and it means knowing when your father's drinking so you don’t set him off. But when Chuck or Brenda, his siblings, are in the line of fire, Thomas knows he will always choose to be dumb for them. Things begin to change when he is 6, when his mother begins bringing home shady men who stare at him with lingering eyes that make his skin crawl and hungry eyes directed at Brenda that make his blood boil. Things change again when on his 7th birthday, his mother forces Thomas to serve said shady men, which only gives them opportunities to reach out and touch him. And things change for the last time on his 8th birthday when he sees his mother receive a hefty stack of bills from two of those men, who stare at Thomas like they just hit the lottery. That night in the basement of his family's home will always be burned into his brain, a beginning to what Brenda called "Hell" and Thomas called "Life". At 14, the world decided that Thomas needed a break.

How Thomas is now nothing but a WICKED mutt, working on the same arenas he himself had fought to death in. He can’t let Lizzy go through that. He can’t let her go through all that alone. And so Newt makes his decision. Teresa hadn’t even begun to pick out the district male’s name before:
“I volunteer as tribute!”
Or, when Newt’s 12 year old sister's name is drawn at the Reaping, Newt volunteers as the male tribute so that he can protect her through the Games and ensure she gets home, no matter what the cost. The memory of that bat coming down on his best friend's leg. The memory of two grown men grabbing his beaten, thrashing body, dragging him off and away, giving Thomas no time to look at his face for what very well could have been the last time.
The face that sent butterflies swarming through Thomas's stomach and spewing from his lips, into the world around him like a forbidden song. He'd run for the hills to catch them, and when he did, he'd hide them away in a rusted tin can. Yes, he'd hide them. He'd hide those beautiful, disgusting, violent, gentle, pure, blood-stained butterflies, and with them, he'd hide these feelings he felt from everyone, himself included. That way, the pain on his face at this moment would not make itself known. So he wouldn't be next.
