Jinx is dead.

She let her arm flop out beside her, fingers brushing the edge of the mattress. “It’s loud,” she muttered. Not accusatory. Just a shade too tired. Honest. “In here.” She tapped the side of her temple with a knuckle. “Thought maybe if you kept looking, it’d drown it out.”
There was a pause, too long, the room going quiet like the words had knocked something so loose inside him that he couldn’t make his lungs work. Ekko sat back a little in the chair, like he wasn’t sure whether to move closer or bolt.
“Not really how that works,” he said finally. Quiet, but not unkind.
“I know.” Her voice cracked just a little. She closed her eyes. “Still.”

Jinx looked up at him, her eyes half-lidded, searching his face as if she could barely believe it. There was a moment where her expression flickered, the remnants of the pain she used to carry briefly clouding her eyes. But it was fleeting, like the mist lifting after a storm. She smiled, a genuine, small smile, something she didn't allow herself often. Not even before.

“I will be.” A lie. Yet the girl pushed on, turning with as much of a glare she could to the boy. “I-, we’re together. We got each others’ backs, and when we get those supplies, we’ll make the nest safe. But Ekko, please, stop-, stop friggin’ asking me-“
“Okay, okay,” he placated, swallowing softly. She could still see the reluctance in his eyes, still see that fury-inducing worry and disbelief at her.

“I trust you.” He murmured, forcing brown and soft eyes back to the streets. She ignored the light burn behind her eyes, forcing them to be rigid along the streets below them.
