Idly, as Lan Xichen’s face – his grief right there for Huaisang to see – shifts around his decision, Huaisang realizes that Lan Xichen is the exception, not the rule. Lan Wangji is the rule: a Lan only loves once. It’s obvious to Huaisang – to the world – who Lan Wangji’s one great love is. Xichen, though, has loved so very many people – Mingjue, A-Yao, Lan Wangji, his parents, maybe even Huaisang himself – but so few of them have loved him back with that same intensity.
“I do not know how to hate him,” Xichen finally says, his tongue darting out of his mouth to wet his lips. “And I do not want to hate you.”
“But you do,” Huaisang whispers. “That’s okay, Xichen-ge. I’ve earned it.”
