Aiden Caldwell did not believe that love was for him, yet it seemed that love found him in the shape of a tall, handsome French man leaning against a wall painting him in a purple hue at the Fish eye. The pilgrim had his feelings about the man, there was a time he hated the man, and it pained him to admit that there could never be anything between them, that the other man never really meant anything he did or said after Aiden learned that he had betrayed him. At least, that's what the young man thought.

When Buffy dies in The Gift, the Scoobies are left shattered. Xander steps up to the plate and, without even realizing it, takes over leadership of the gang. Slowly the Scoobies begin to recover, but just as they are starting to get the feet under them again they receive word that the Watchers Council is coming and Cordelia just had a vision that someone was going to open the Hellmouth.
This is an amazing story and Xander is super BAMF. His deepening relationship with Spike, his leadership of the Scoobies, and his paternal relationship with Dawn are just beautiful. He holds the Scoobies together and Spike holds him together. I also love that it's very long with 3 parts to the series. The three parts are Reconstruction, Restoration, and Reunification all of which can be found on the same page.
Part of my favorite scene from the fic:
"Which is why, in answer to your question, I know everything will be fine. You see," Xander leaned over and kissed Dawn on the forehead. "It's not complicated if you remember the most important thing. Love the girl. Everything else is just window dressing." -

Summary
Spike never has behaved the way Buffy expected... not even when he's a feral demon.
At the end of 'Lover's Walk,' instead of sending his goons to fight Spike, Mayor Wilkins sends them to capture him. When they return with the vampire and a bonus Slayer, Wilkins injects them with some new drugs he got from Professor Walsh over at the university. With Buffy stripped of her strength and Spike stripped of his human traits, all the Mayor has to do is lock them in a room and let the Slayer of Slayers do what he does best.
Buffy wakes up weak, injured, in chains, and at the complete mercy of her mortal enemy. Yet instead of torturing and killing her, Spike frees her and tends her wounds. She can't ask him why, because he's nonverbal. The two of them form a bond, depending on each other to escape. By the time Buffy and Spike get free of the Mayor's clutches, everything between them has changed... as has everything Buffy thought she knew about demons.Bookmarked by sotheytellme
