“You should really quit smoking, you know,”
Grantaire takes another long drag from his cigarette and blows smoke over the edge of the fire escape, pretending to look like the sudden interjection hasn’t startled him. The rest of the Amis have trickled into the emergency post-protest meeting, filling the room with shouts and anger, and Grantaire has stepped out for a minute. He tells himself it’s because he doesn’t care, not because he’s still shaking from adrenaline. The nicotine helps. What doesn’t help his growing anxiety is when Enjolras sits down beside his careful perch, a good couple of inches between them. Please don’t yell at me again.
“You should stop organizing protests.”
Enjolras’s sharp intake of breath is palpable, and Grantaire can practically feel the frustration emanating from the man. He refuses to look at that face, which is undoubtedly flushed red against Enjolras’s golden curls. Instead, he regards the view from the fire escape with an attempt at an artist’s gaze; he studies the way the unusually bright, October sunlight casts on the run-down apartment building across the street’s crumbling, burnt orange bricks. -

Grantaire lowers himself fully onto the floor, looking up at the screen. He mutes the channel and watches for the next hour, just to see. His heart rate slowly calms as he watches the cars zip across the screen. There's only one more shot of Enjolras, right before the end of the race. He has his helmet off (he got a haircut at some point) and he's gazing up at, presumably, another screen. He doesn't look like a righteous angel. He looks devastated. Grantaire's not as happy about it as he thought he'd be.
Or: in 1993, Grantaire and Enjolras both stand on the podium after their last race together. Nine years earlier, Grantaire picks up Enjolras from a German airport. What happens in between is anyone's guess.

When she looked at Marius she'd felt a longing so strong she'd assumed it was him she longed for; now she knew that longing was in fact jealousy, that everytime she looked at him she'd really been looking at Cosette on his arm, Cosette by his side, Cosette giving him one of those sweet smiles... and that what Éponine wanted most of all was Cosette's attention bestowed upon her instead.
Or, a fic in which Éponine's life—which had been going relatively well for once—becomes infinitely more complicated the night a siren attacks the crew of the Musain.
