The first inclination she’d had of being dead was the young woman sitting next to her. It was a Sunday, her husband was out of the house at a talk for trainee joiners now that he’d retired and had the time, and Mary had been sat watching Coronation Street while waiting for him to get back. The ads were on. The light of the screen reflected back at her in this woman’s eyes and for a moment Mary wondered how she’d got in without the sound of the door opening.
It was the soft smile and the sympathy in her gaze that told Mary she was dead.

When Esther, one of the Zeniths that had shown some kindness to Edwin before, reaches out to Charles – an uneasy alliance is formed. There’s something about a sunrise. He’s never been good with words, so he’s struggling to put a finger on it, but he knows it’s there. Maybe it’s the rarity of it – he can’t remember the last time he was up before the sun, so the few times he saw it rise were few and far between. Or maybe it’s the fragility of it which isn’t there once sunset comes, the soft surprise of when the rays first appear, chasing away the night.

When Charles started feeling that tickly feeling that he knew meant he needed to regress, he immediately decided to ignore it. They were busy saving someone. Surely he could wait until they were done. All they were doing was sneaking it, freeing the ghost, and running away. Plenty of time to regress after all that.
He didn’t really factor in the possibility of him and Edwin getting kidnapped, too.
