Depending on whatever nightmare she'd last endured, she's found it both a comfort and a burden.

Just a few years before the world ended, a kid barely eight years of age showed up at the gates of Ericson’s Boarding School for the Troubled Youth. Just like any other kid – with tons of emotional baggage, unceremoniously dumped by their parents, and ignored in the eyes of the school staff. At the very least, the kid wasn’t on the outside for too long.
“My dad used to hit me a lot,” a blonde boy spoke up at lunchtime.
“Oh, mine hates me,” a boy with freckles and his hair in twists joined in. “... He won’t even look me in the eyes anymore.”
The new kid blinked at the boys, before quietly adding, “My dad’s dead.”

After the events on the bridge, AJ can't sleep for the memories of that night coming back to mercilessly remind him of the duties in survival that he so wishes weren't necessary. If he had to do it, why does he feel so guilty? He doesn't regret it, he tells Clementine, but it still hurts him. She listens and wishes things didn't have to be the way they were, for his sake. Maybe then he wouldn't have to worry himself up all through the night, but she knows far too well that she does the exact same thing herself.
Perhaps they're both just a little bit broken -- but it's not their fault they're that way.
