Fíli grew up knowing that he would one day be the ruler of his people; but when Erebor is reclaimed and his uncle's sanity starts to fail, he begins to wonder about the Arkenstone's relationship to the madness of his forbears. Soon, war comes to the Lonely Mountain, pushing all other concerns aside; and when the battle ends and his closest kin have fallen, Fíli finds out for himself the truth of the Arkenstone's hold.
(This is an AU involving Fíli surviving the Battle Of The Five Armies, and begins with a very different version of said Battle. Please see the story notes for more information!)
