"But what if they go away again?" he whispers, almost imperceptible.
His dad's arms tighten. Chris hears him breathe in loudly. "That can happen. But if they do, she won't stop being loved by them. Not ever."
Buck nods when his dad's eyes wander to his. "And I'm sure they'll do everything in their power to stay. Just like us, buddy. Your dad and me? We're here. And we'll always fight to come back."
And maybe that night, as they turn the TV off and brush their teeth and Chris asks them both to read him a story while tucking him into bed, Chris still doesn't fully believe in fairytales.
But maybe he starts to believe in something else.
With his dad. With Buck. And all the people in his life. Because his life is so full of love, even if people leave.
