The defeat of Vecna left everyone relieved, it took time but a simple headache was no longer seen as a death sentence amongst the group,the worries of the upside down were replaced with the worries about test scores and basketball games. 'Of course. I just- I want you to know that I’m always here for you' El said. Will really truly appreciated it, and he would tell her if something was happening. But that was the exact problem, nothing was happening he was still just Will, and no presentation meant he was a beta. The idea of talking about his disappointment was scary, and the idea of telling anyone, even his sister, how much he longed to be an omega seemed painful, like he was actually admitting that he was never meant to be an one, and that all of his instincts had been wrong."

Will Byers is turning 17 very soon, and for him that means he is a beta. He's made it this far without presenting, but still is holding out some hope that he will present as an omega. Being an omegas always made the most sense for him, and best of all if he were an omega he may have a chance with his best friend.

This is what finally caught Lucas’s attention, enough to fully draw him back to the present. El had never asked for his help before; he’d never imagined that she would ever need it. She quite literally had telekinetic superpowers, not to mention Mike’s unwavering support even after their breakup and Will’s steadfast presence as her adopted brother. What could Lucas possibly do?
“My…help?” he managed.
“I have an idea,” El said, stronger now, more firm. Something flickered in her eyes. Doubt, maybe, or perhaps fear. She continued anyway: “I think I know how to get her back, but I need you to help me.”

In the six months since Max fell victim to Vecna, Lucas notices changes in his friends' relationship, El piggybacks into Lucas's head and brings him into the mindscape with her to find Max, and they find her in the midst of her memories, safe from Vecna but unable to escape on her own.
