Wolfwood’s usual pine scent is there, faint underneath the unknown one. The new scent is refreshing, crisp. Vash tries to put a name to the smell, sifting through his brain to recall. It’s familiar but distant. He’s come across the scent before but not very often for him to remember easily.
It’s when a memory from months ago hits him and he knows exactly what the scent is.

“....Do you remember anything before our...our trip?” asked Wolfwood.
Vash shook his head.
Wolfwood felt himself getting desperate as he asked his next question; “Do you know who you are?”
Those damn blue eyes gave him the most pitiful look Wolfwood had ever seen, and Vash ever so slowly shook his head ‘No’. The waves came crashing down over Wolfwood’s head as the whole planet stopped in its tracks.
He didn’t remember.
He had failed.
He hadn’t saved Vash, that needle-noggin was long gone still stuck in July.
All he had done was save the shell of a man he had wanted to save with all his being.
Why was it?
Why was it that all he could do was fuck everything up?
tldr: two guys go on a road trip trying to survive a post Lost July world, Wolfwood is trying his best and Vash is figuring what it means to be human

Summary
Hanahaki is common with grief. Love with no place to go. Sounds poetic. Sounds pretty. It also looks pretty, the flowers are usually fresh and smell beautiful.
It doesn't feel pretty or beautiful. The thorns are scratching at her throat. She can feel them in her lungs as they're digging their way out. Meryl wants to stick her finger in her throat, grab and pull them, but when she tries she only finds the gag reflex.
For a while, it must be grief. Wolfwood said so. It's just Roberto, it's just July, it's something that's dead and can't affect her anymore. She needs to cry it out and feel better. She tells herself she work on herself and survive it - does she really even want to?
But there comes that first flower, that first gods damned flower and she knows.
Vash calls them geraniums-

He’s rather tall even without that obnoxious cross, dressed ostentatiously in a black suit over a white button down. The jacket hangs open, but he’s done his buttons up all the way to the collar, which can’t be comfortable in the heat. The suit isn’t really what makes him stick out so much as the shock of blond hair on his head, straw yellow and done in the most obnoxious pointy hairstyle, sticking upright as if defying gravity save for a few strands which hang in front of his stark blue eyes.
He’s also smiling, wide and eager, as if he didn’t just get picked up out of the desert. He beelines for Midvalley, managing to keep his balance surprisingly well as the bus takes off, dropping into a bit of a slouch to meet the saxophonist’s eyes.
“You’re the ones who saved me, right?” he asks, his eyes darting over to Midvalley’s partner. Hoppered is a bit of an oddball in appearance—Wolfwood had certainly done a double take when they first met—so it is a mite impressive that this man doesn’t even baulk, only smiling wider.

His face was as ageless as ever. His hair, now dark and long, was pulled into a knot on the back of his head. A few strands hung free, framing his blue eyes, brushing against elegant cheekbones. His lips were parted in shock. Wolfwood had pressed kisses to them, once. The last time, he’d cradled his face in a gentle apology. Wolfwood was the only one who had known that it was a goodbye.
“Nope,” said Vash the Stampede, now only a few centuries older, violently shaking his head. “Nope,” he said again, backing out the door the way he came.
