The darkness of the moon mixed with the slow falling of snow created an out of body feeling as Natalie slipped from Lottie and out of the small shelter. She stumbled around, not quite sure what she was doing. A wave of nausea suddenly consumed her, sending her toppling to her knees, gripping her stomach. The pain was awful, like a thousand knives being stabbed into her stomach at once. She let out silent groans, muffled by her coat sleeve. She couldn’t wake the others. The pain stopped - but only for a moment.

Natalie never expected to die a hero. She expected to die alone, coked out in the back of some shitty van, a victim to herself and her fucking impulses. Or, she expected to die in fear, victim to a hunt or a sacrifice to some stupid Wilderness God she doesn’t believe in. So, in some ways, maybe this is a plus:
Yay me, I guess. At least they can put ‘she tried’ on my gravestone.
But this doesn’t feel like a victory. All it feels like is cold. A cold, lonely death, buried in the snow and completely, entirely alone. A useless death. A death that no one will remember.
This is how she dies - not with a bang, but with a whimper.
And then she wakes up.
OR: Natalie never makes it to the mountain. A sudden blizzard claims her first. But when she opens her eyes, she's back to the day of the crash. This time, she’s determined to keep everyone alive - even if The Wilderness has other plans.

But when her team plane crashes on it's way to Nationals and Maisie finds herself stuck with a bunch of her teammates and an insufferable asshole, she can't seem to do anything but wish for those days instead of anticipating.
Toby Scatorccio, Natalie Scatorccio's twin brother, is - simply put - a menace to fucking society. After his father died, no parental figure gave a fuck what he did anymore, so he just did whatever. Drinking, fighting, breaking school property, literally anything for entertainment. When his sister learnt she was going to nationals, their mother only muttered something about how if one of them was going both of them should, so off to Seattle with a bunch of chicks was Toby. Little did he know he wasn't going to Seattle, nor coming back for a long time.
