“Teasing me all day. Trying to get to me with that dirty mouth.” Vi flicks Caitlyn lightly on the nose before she takes a step back and admires Caitlyn’s bound form. “Being a brat.”
“Well, if you’re going to punish me, I’d say get on with it, then,” Caitlyn says with that edge of irreverence, smirking like the brat she is.

Caitlyn couldn’t really describe it. Only the obvious things; red skin, yellow eyes, white matted hair, horns, tail. Like it had crawled from hell itself.
Her heart pounded. Cold sweat and goosebumps broke all over her skin. She felt hot and cold all at once.
Then the creature spoke. Low, throaty and husky. Threatening.

The name feels wrong. She raises a hand to her lips, like it’s an incantation she can’t believe she actually spoke aloud. Of course it’s not her. Another nightmare, that’s all this is.
The figure sways on the spot, moonlight catching at just the right angle, and a gasp rips from Caitlyn’s throat.
“Gonna stab me with that thing, cupcake?”
The letter opener clatters out of Caitlyn’s hand and she darts to the window, catching Vi just before she hits the floor.

And then she has to bite back the crack in her voice, and look hurriedly away, because she’s afraid the raw anguish will spook Caitlyn, will eat away at what they have together.
But Caitlyn simply gazes at her, eyes heavy with sorrow, and Vi was wrong, wrong to ever doubt her, wrong to ever judge her for the badge she wore or the rifle she wielded, because Caitlyn is everything soft and potent and sincere.
And that touch, the soothing pressure against her hand, the warmth of their intertwined fingers; it’s like nothing Vi’s ever had. It’s addicting, dizzying, sends her mind spinning off with a deep sense of belonging.
It feels, for the first time in years, like home.Or
