Tommy was falling.
Slowly, ineffably falling.
And he knew this—the land of Skyros never wanted him, or rather, didn't want him either. Perhaps he thought what King Lycomedes had said was genuine, that he could really settle for less and seek friendship where his friendship was wanted.
Now, Tommy can't help but think that he's just being hoisted with his own petard.

‘Here goes nothing.’ He stood in front of his friend and then took the flower from his hand gently.
"I found this lily a few minutes ago by the woods, Toms. It's funny because they don't usually grow during the winter, or even survive the snow. This one did though."
Tommy stood there not knowing what to say, but paying close attention to everything his friend was saying.
"The lily of the valley has a deeper meaning, you know?" Wilbur continued as he admired the flower. "People say it's the perfect flower to ask for forgiveness when you don't know how to apologize to someone you’ve hurt. It is the flower of rebirth from a broken relationship as it symbolizes purity, sincerity and happiness." He explained, his voice cracking a little at the end.
