At the end of the hall, the door was slightly ajar, voices spilling out from inside. Thomas hesitated, just for a moment, his hand hovering over the handle. He had spent the ride rehearsing what he’d say—something polite but distant, to keep himself safe. But now, standing at the threshold, he couldn’t think of the words. He pushed the door open.
“…And I’m just saying, if you’re going to eat six burritos, you better commit to the consequences.”
“Six? That’s restraint for me,” came another voice, dry but amused.
Two boys looked up at him. One was sprawled on the lower bunk, his dark hair messily falling into his eyes, his posture too comfortable, too confident for Thomas to fully trust. The other was sitting cross-legged on a desk chair, with ruffled blond hair and a soft, approachable grin tugging at the corners of his mouth.
“You must be Thomas,” the blond one said, standing and offering his hand.
Thomas hesitated for a second before shaking it. “Yeah. I’m Thomas.” His voice came out.
“I’m Newt,” the blond one said with a grin. “And this loudmouth is Minho."Or: Thomas learns to adjust to a normal life. After the trauma from his previous boarding school; WCKD.

Summary
There's a red string tying people between soulmates.
Newt once believed in them, but he also believed in relationships outside of bounds, believed that it was better to be without a soulmate.
Thomas grew up in a non-bound family and had known the heavy prejudice that came with it and genuinely wanted to meet his own soulmate, and hadn't considered what he'd do once they were gone.
Before they had even met, they had lost that bond.
But the universe has a funny way of bringing people back together. -

Thomas couldn’t tell if he was dead. If he were, would he still be able to hear the voices of his friends echoing in this vast void? Would he still be able to feel the small hole in his chest, the ripped flesh attempting to put itself together as fast as possible?
