Tring gestured toward the pitch. Mannering turned to look, noticing for the first time the players on the field. His mouth dropped open.
There was Bill Bristow, wearing an open-neck navy jersey with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows and white shorts that revealed powerful thighs, running near the centre of the field and yelling encouragements at his teammates. His greying hair, usually neatly combed, fell over his forehead. Mannering could not look away.

“Worried I’ll scream for help?” he asked bitingly.
The Baron chuckled. “Not at all. Do you want to know why?” He leaned closer and slipped the scarf over his eyes before whispering, “I think you secretly want this.”
Bristow actually catches the Baron in flagrante delicto, for once. The Baron still manages to turn the situation around.
