The USS Vancouver had failed to respond to a high-priority message from Starfleet approximately seven hours and thirty-nine minutes ago, and exactly three hours, twenty minutes, and fifty-one seconds later, all transmission ceased. Since then, it’d been all-out radio silence. The Enterprise had come within range to receive the message a mere hour ago, with the subsequent call from Starfleet brass being the quickest briefing Kirk had ever had.

Jim and Spock go out on a mission that is more than it seems. With the aftermath of Kirk's death still being rippled through his First Officer, when things go wrong, they get worse. Much worse.
