Look, Frances was just trying to survive. To keep her head down, and away from trouble. She had enough on her plate between balancing school, and her three part time jobs. She only had seven years to save up enough money before her eighteenth birthday. The day in which her Grandmother would permanently kick her out. Everything was going great, or as great as things could be with her situation. Until she bumped into someone like her. A boy not much older than her; who was going through the situation she would one day be in. A boy with the same tired eyes; eyes only seen in kids who were forced to grow up too fast. A kindred soul, who had also been failed by the adults and the system meant to protect them. She was meant to be invisible, to keep her head down, and to not form any connections with anyone. But, as she looked into his sunset eyes, sickly pale skin, and the rags masquerading as clothes, she realized she never had a choice.
TLDR: Before the river incident with Dazai, Atsushi runs into a fellow orphan, who, like him, is just trying to survive; and they end up adopting each other. Finding the family they had always dreamed of with each other. -

Kunikida blinked. Chuuya knew what it was to make quick decisions with weighty consequences. He would understand that conflict very well. The detective wasn’t entirely sure if this was an olive branch, an attempt to understand him or simply a polite farce, but the redhead probably wasn’t the type to ask questions he didn’t really want the answer to.

In which Dazai briefly returning to the Mafia sets off a chain of events that eventually result in Kunikida and Yosano finding out just how scared their coworker was to lose them.
At the same time, Chuuya watches his partner learn in real time that not everything is a self-fulfilling prophecy, and that not everything Dazai wants is destined to be lost.
