Just a bit more.
The sand was falling harder from the stone ceiling, trickling down like a waterfall, stones that constructed the ceiling crumbled, and Kaveh tried to make his legs run faster to no avail. The continuous bleeding from his abdomen made him dizzy, weakening his hold on the unconscious boy, his body faltering and hitting the wall on his side when he felt a hand on his back.
There was a push.
And then, before he realized it, he fell forward, body lurching into the sand while something rumbled, creating noises so loud and rough vibration akin to an earthquake. Red eyes ignored the sting, and he forced his blink reflexes to stop as a hand fanned away all sand to clear his sight. All of that, and only to see that he was out of the now-collapsing temple, with a sharp realization that he had just narrowly escaped it. Call it his luck, but–
“Alhaitham?”
It took one wrong move for everything to fall apart. Alhaitham could no longer see, and Kaveh was seeking forgiveness. Their world revolved around the sound of footsteps, small touches, and moving the chair to clear the way.

"…don't you think, Alhaitham?"
He could have strangled the Amurta sage for calling attention to him so directly. Instead, he frowned slightly and made a non-committal noise as he tried to figure out what, exactly, he thought about the statement that had been made. The sage in question had made a few good points earlier, but Alhaitham wasn't certain that the most recent bit had been an extension of those.
Calling back to them might be risky if the conversation had moved too far beyond it. And yet…
A scoff from one of the others. "The Scribe believes himself too far above the rest of us mere mortals to bother offering an opinion."
"The scribe," Alhaitham corrected, "is meant to be a neutral presence, recording and not interfering."

Summary
“Be more careful. I don’t want to have to worry about you every single time you go off into the desert, Haitham,” Kaveh mumbles, but his tone lacks the fire that it should have. Instead, it comes off soft and concerned, making something twist inside Alhaitham. It leaves him feeling a little thrown off, dizzy and warm from the words and the care they carry.
“Of course, senior,” Alhaitham replies, and his voice comes off just as quiet. A little breathless even. Kaveh’s eyes flick to him, some unknown emotion hidden there, but he doesn’t say anything more as he pushes himself up to stand.

It was a two-to-three weeks' journey from Sumeru to Chenyu Vale's Yilong Wharf, where Kaveh was to meet a potential supplier. Alhaitham meant to travel further inland, supposedly to acquire some documents and books he had commissioned a scholar to restore, but really because it had been too many months since his feet had wandered past Sumeru's borders. Kaveh and Alhaitham's schedules and destinations had more-or-less aligned, and so Kaveh had asked, again and again, if they could travel together.
("To save cost?"
"What kind of image do you have of me in your heart!? No, not just to save cost, can't you see I want to travel with you—!?")
For some reason, Alhaitham had at last given in to Kaveh's ceaseless requests.
Kaveh and Alhaitham travel to Chenyu Vale together.

Kaveh took some time to respond. Furtive glances cast between the book on his lap and to where Alhaitham sat on the opposite side of the table told him that Kaveh was still ruminating. Until –
“You?” Kaveh drew himself upright, his eyes sharp with focus colliding with Alhaitham’s. “What? Why?”
He doubted that Tighnari had received the same hostility when offering his services. “If you don’t want to list Tighnari, then naturally the responsibility would fall to me. I’m as knowledgeable of your history of ailments as he is.”
“That’s not the issue,” Kaveh rebuked, leaning forwards with a sudden ferocity. “You would be just as willing to travel to Liyue if the circumstances came to it? I don’t buy it. What’s in this for you?”
Not for the first time he questioned how it had come to this between them, despite fully knowing the answer. Fruitless endeavours. “An emergency contact of my own.”
(Alhaitham offers to be Kaveh’s emergency contact in exchange for Kaveh acting as his. As to how things pertaining to Kaveh usually transpire, this does not go as planned, and a difficult truth comes to light.)
