Sebastian lived a normal life after retiring, he had his home, lost in the middle of nowhere with only a few houses around and mostly elderly people who either didn’t know about his racing career or did but still considered him as a normal man. He had his garden, growing crops and keeping bees, his little safe heaven. He had all the peace and quiet he ever dreamed of.

Seb flashed a pleased smile to Charles leaning back into the sofa and he couldn’t stop himself from teasing Charles a little bit:
“Oh did you miss that much Sharles? I never knew you cared so much about little old me.”
Charles blushed, because they both knew the first was true, who wouldn’t miss the great Sebastian Vettel and the second was a lie. They just never talked about the details of feelings because obviously there had been someone Sebastian cared more about since he had married the man. Though since Seb brought it up and Charles thought this would be their only moment on privacy he decided to just ask:
“You know where my feelings stand, however I must ask what is going on with your marriage? Oscar may think he is sneaky, but it is quite easy to recognize some of the places in his social media posts and how often he seems to spend time on those places.”

The first time Mark mentioned Oscar’s name, was probably during one of their normal dinners at home, when Sebastian was on break week between races. It wasn’t even anything grand, just Mark mentioning that he was looking into this Australian rookie and thinking he might sign him up. Sebastian knowing that despite spending a lot of time at their home in Switzerland, Mark was still a very proud Aussie who wouldn’t miss a chance to promote some fresh Australian talent into the sport. Sebastian could respect that and it was quite endearing how excited his husband got over the chance of potentially getting a new Aussie into Formula 1. Maybe the kid could be the next Australian Formula 1 champion. It wasn’t until the whole contract- gate with Alpine when Sebastian realized that maybe Oscar indeed was something more than your average rookie Mark was managing.

“I did do it,” Sebastian replies. He too had once left a team built around him, where he won his championships, to go to Ferrari where another driver was already established. “I think that you’ll do better than I did,” he adds.

Or after retirement in 2022, it takes 5 years, 6 months and exactly 189 days before Charles sees Seb again.
Until he stands before him, a multiple world champion in his own right, and sees the contentment in Seb’s eyes, watching his newest acquisition of bees leave their home and explore their new world.
He knows now what he seeks, and what Seb truly meant when he left that message on his helmet all those years ago.
Be happy and smile, in whatever you do.
Perhaps what he needs is just this. What Seb has now found here.
