Realization came a moment later, hitting Bucky's system like a cryo freeze. It wasn’t possible. Was it? Sam's chest tightened, his own guilt gnawing at him. He couldn't shake Riley's death, or the countless others—friends and allies who had died because he hadn't been fast enough, hadn't been strong enough, hadn't been there.
The memories were sharp, like a blade pressed against his ribs—the ‘what ifs ' that haunted him every time he thought of those people gone because he hadn't been fast enough, hadn't done enough. The slow ache as friends drifted away, leaving him with fragments of himself to piece back together alone. He couldn't let that happen to Bucky. Not after everything he’d endured. Not when Sam has survived everything only to witness his friends leave him behind.
‘I can't lose you, too,’ Sam whispered, voice breaking just slightly. ‘I couldn't... not again. You think you're alone in this, Bucky? You’re not. I'm right here, I'm not leaving. I won't leave. You've been through hell, I've seen it, and... and I've failed before. I won't fail you.’

If Bucky had known that he was going to end up in some cheesy 80's crossover between Sam's time in the Falcon program and the movie Top Gun, he would've asked Sam some questions beforehand, like:
Were you into guys or did young Sam really just flirt with everyone like that? Nobody, like, died horribly during the training part of this program, did they? Because these seem very unstable. And was it normal for the "Take My Breath Away" guitar riff to play every time we made eye contact?
He hadn't known, though, that Scarlet Witch from SHEIN would look into their heads and pull this horrible storyline out, so he just had to keep his head above the water long enough to get out of there.

Steve was relaxing in a soft blue armchair by the window, sipping some tea with copious amounts of honey as he watched the sun set. It was how he preferred to spend his evenings, especially after stressful days, and with a tower full of traumatized superheroes (of whom he was somehow the most sane- him, the one who tried to go to war with about a million chronic illnesses? Him, the one who’s sixty years ahead of his time? Him? -he was often helping someone, somewhere, feel a little more safe.
And he didn’t mind. Of course he didn’t! These people were family to him. But sometimes it was nice to just sit and watch something that hadn’t changed, that would always be beautiful, while drinking the one brand of tea that hadn’t gone out of business while he was in the ice.

In which Steve, the man sixty years ahead of his time, is somehow the most sane in the tower, the one who helps everyone else to cope. When his team- his family -is struggling with their past, he's there, with whatever they need. Of course he is. He loves them. But who's there for him when he needs help? (Everyone. Sam had always wanted to fly. Something about soaring above everything, free with the wind and the sun and the sky, had always appealed to him. Putting on those wings was everything Sam had ever dreamed of. Flight, real flight, not blocked by a helicopter or jet or anything. Plus Riley- not just his bunkmate, not just his partner, but his best friend. His wingman.

But then another missile whistled towards them, and Riley must not have seen it, this time.
Sam dodged.
Riley didn’t.
Riley fell.

Rhodes fell.

Joaquín fell.

Sam was too late.***
In other words, a look at Sam's relationship with flight and the people who flew beside him.(Basically I realized there's a lot of parallels between Riley and Joaquín and then realized he saw Rhodes get shot down too and went 'hmmm he's witnessed a lot of people die/get critically injured with no way to save them despite his best efforts... wouldn't it be a shame if someone were to... write about that')

Barely five minutes passed before there was a knock on the door. Bucky padded across the apartment and met his boyfriend who he hadn’t called waiting on the other side. Sam was wearing the wings and he was slightly out of breath, signaling that this was a last minute trip. Before Bucky could react, Sam had him crushed in his arms. He could feel him shaking.
“I saw you walk into that darkness,” Sam whispered, his voice light and frail. Bucky had never heard him sound so…breakable. “I thought you were dead.”
Bucky hugged him back, reveling in the comforting weight of his lover. “I’m not dead, doll. I’m right here.”
OR immediately following Valentina's announcement, Bucky leaves to get his wits together. Of course, his boyfriend finds him.
