I thought I'd try the Whumptober2022 challenge on Tumblr and repost here. This is an AU that is VERY LOOSELY based on the Netflix series Devil in Ohio, which I'm slightly obsessed with. However, I'm using original characters, starting from the beginning, and using plot elements through to the end, so you don't have to have watched the series to understand the fic. That said, I highly recommend the series. And it's the spooky season, so why not!
Willow Camden upends her life completely when she encounters a couple of brainwashed kids in her psych ward on October 1. When spooky things start happening, she has to decide if putting her own family in danger is worth it to protect the twins or if she should return them to the cult they escaped from.

Your grip tightens on the foam handles. The chained links of the fence tower many feet into the air. You won’t climb. You’ll break. Grunting, the cold nips at your reddening fingers. The diamond-shaped wiring snaps beneath the tool’s beak, diagonally working up a few feet and then all around. You sniffle as the cold clamps its jaws at every inch of exposed skin. Why did winter start early this year? Stiffening fingers drop the bolt cutters and you push at the fence, doing your best not to cut your numbing skin.
The cold and you aren’t friends. Neither is the idea of upsetting anyone hospitable to you. Neither is each second of not knowing what your siblings are going through. You’ll do what you do best: You’ll silently remove yourself from the situation. Silently, right?
