Summary
The year of 2004 brings many novelties, but out of all of them, one holds the title of most unexpected.
On May 2nd, 2004, the president of Marionette Robotics, the company behind the revolutionary “Marionette” androids, announces their decision to branch into making… music-oriented animatronics, of all things. Seven new models of Marionettes are released, and a contest is held to raise interest. All one has to do is fill out a form to have a chance to be one of ten lucky winners of a new Marionette of their choosing.
For U-M student Rob Cantor, leader of a drummerless band, this seems worth a shot. He sends in the form, not expecting to get anything more than a consolation prize. To everyone’s shock, he wins, & along with his bandmates & their shiny new Marionette, he’s launched into the limelight.
But after the novelty of it all fades, the robot proves to not be as durable as expected, & its replacement raises more than a few questions. If it’s not sentient, then why does it seem to go off-script? Is that look in its eyes really something more, or is Rob just paranoid? And when a rogue Marionette is said to be on the loose in Ann Arbor, whose side should he really be on? -
