The bread on the tray was mouldy, too little to constitute a meal, even in Coldridge, even for him, but it was food, an edible disguise for the key and the message underneath, and Daud put his back to the bars, angled his body to cover the paper but let light shine on it, looked at the rows and rows of symbols and letters and numbers and stopped chewing for a moment, had to close his eyes for a moment, fight the lump in his throat and the sudden, inescapable memories that the cipher brought, memories he'd forced down, down, down, as deep as they could go, he wouldn't betray his people, wouldn't see them dead or in Coldridge, used against him, leverage to have him sign the confession, but now they were back to the fore, never forgotten, six months on and either promise or solace.
After six months in Coldridge, Daud's people are there to break him out.
