Being able to channel his connection to the stars, ‘rise like a phoenix’ as they say, has saved Pyke’s life several times over. He’s sure it’ll continue to do so until the day it fails. That doesn’t mean it’s a pleasant experience. It’s not so poetic as it may seem, it’s not ‘rising from the dark with a fire in your heart’. It’s a lot closer to being torn from the easy dark to the feeling of burning alive on the inside.

This was something Shepherd accepted long before he had entered Barovia, although he had thought he could lead them all out of the hell that was Barovia. But when he watched the only person he care about be consumed in fire of course he chased them, love made Silas Morgan a selfish man. As the flames consumed their bodies, Gherix revealed himself, he offered a trade to Shepherd. A second chance.
And now he wasn't in Barovia, he wasn't in Stryga, hells he wasn't even on Avantris anymore. Instead Shepherd found himself on the Rhapsody, a large ship owned by a man named Rett and his partner Pyke.
