For some time, she works in their modest inn and lives a simple life. One day, she joins the military and, during a crossing of the Fold, discovers that she can summon light. She is taken to the Little Palace where she slowly gets closer to the general of the Second Army. All the while, everyone looks at Alina like she is the answer while she herself doesn't even know who she was, is, and most importantly, who she is going to be.Series

The Darkling finds a mysterious girl near death with the forest burned down around her. Can he get her back to the little palace in time to save her?
He can barely see her features through the coating of blood, and it soaks her nightgown, which he guesses must be white, though it’s so red he can’t tell. From the little he can tell, she looks very young – maybe five or six.
He scoops up her mangled form - so small, he thinks, so fragile (indeed, she barely weighs anything at all) - and climbs onto his horse with her still in his arms. Her breathing is shallow and her heartbeat faint against his chest.

Summary
Instead of Alina and Mal being saved from the whaler by Sturmhond's crew, Mal is accidentally killed by the sea whip and Alina is saved alongside Genya from the Darkling.
They decide to return together to the Little Palace and team up to defeat the Darkling (and every small decision diverges the plot further from the original books, into a completely different outcome). They find out the villains have their reasons and are not soulless as they are thought to be, and the people that others look up to are the real villains.
Alina is bolder than in the original series because we want the plot to go forward in a more logical way - and also the protagonist deserves a real character arc.
Also, mind the tags. The first few chapters may seem a little darker, but then the fun begins :)Edit: just updated the last chapter! If you'd only like a glimpse at what could become of Ravka if things were different in the sense explained above, and you could use a good laugh, I highly encourage you to read at least this!

It's a really detailed one that focuses on more than the King being the antagonist, we'll get to that eventually but the first half is more on developing Alina's relationship with everyone else, especially Aleksander. Because these relations will all come in handy later. Furthermore, our two main characters have challenges and all to work through before we get to the King. And yes, Alina might be young and naive, but she is not a fool.
She knows that all it would have taken to turn the hearts of the nation are mutters of a man in love with a woman rather than a man in love with power. She knows that cults for a shadow saint could have easily been formed were it not for the creation of the Black Heretic, an enemy of the people. She knows that Aleksander could have been an eternal King in another life, were it not for his guilt and his need to make amends.
Alina is not a fool—she knows the Fold could have been a love story just as easily as it became a cautionary tale.
She knows that the narrator is all that matters in the way the story goes, for they are the ones to flip a coin and decide on who to cast for the heroes and villains.
And Alina is done letting anyone else be the narrator for their story.
