Equestria is often viewed as a weak nation of pacifists, its more belligerent neighbors viewing the ponies as easy prey to have their magic stolen, lands pillaged, conquered as a ready supply of slaves, or even just devoured outright.
It was not always thus. In ages past, Equestria was a land of heroes and legends, of conflict and glory. In time, the Princess of the Sun learned to temper strength with mercy, power with forbearance, and righteous conviction with benevolence.
But now, centuries of relative peace are drawing to a close. Forces both within and without Equestria awaken, seeing a nation weak and easily toppled. Seeing a people grown fat on peace and luxury, who have long forgotten the hardships of conflict and the glories of war.
Woe betide to all who come to Equestria with ill intent. For in all these long years of peace, the Princess of the Sun has never forgotten the lessons of war, and their eyes watch over their beloved subjects with not only patience and understanding, but an implicit promise of protection.
The time will come soon, when those who would do Celestia's Little Ponies wrong will come to learn... That even an Empire of Mercy is still paved upon the bones of its enemies.

This Summer Sun Celebration Celestia thinks back about her past failures caused by her lack of foresight, and the pain indirectly to her younger sister and adopted daughter caused by her "perfect ruler" facade
However Celestia can't show any weakness to anypony, so after she finishes up the Summer Sun Celebration she heads to her study to vent out her emotions in private
"For my subjects, it has always been a celebration of my defeat of Nightmare Moon. But for me... [sighs] It was just a terrible reminder that I'd had to banish my own sister."
"It's just that the Celebration has always been about us. My defeat of Luna..."
The Summer Sun Celebration isn't just the day she lost Luna, but also the day she met the young Sunset Shimmer and adopted her and took her under her wing as her student and unofficial adopted daughter
While this short story is cannon to the BARS Timeline, it can be read as it's own stand alone story

People will do anything to distract themselves from their problems. In an age where the situation could be both a hundred times worse and a thousand times better, there are still stories floating around. You know the type: a young human gets snatched from his/her homeworld and dropped in a land far from home, and they have to either shape up or ship out before it's too late.
Replace "human" with "Reploid", and you have a good idea what's happened to me. This land of Equestria is as completely alien to me as I am to its residents. If I can't return home then I'll have to figure out how to adapt to its environs, but my time and options are running out quickly. I'm not ashamed to admit that I'm getting desperate.
