Summary
“She’s stubborn,” he says bitterly, and she almost laughs; instead disguises her snort of amusement as the clearing of her throat.
“Well…they do say that kids tend to take after their parents.”
He doesn’t laugh. There's nothing remotely amusing about any of this. “She ain’t a kid no more,” he says quietly, and immediately her face changes, softens at its edges.
“No,” she agrees, “she sure isn’t.”
He knows Ellie’s not a kid anymore. At twenty-one, she's the exact age he was when Sarah was born. That symmetry gnaws at him, now – because he remembers being twenty-one and absolutely terrified about that fragile, impossibly precious life as it was placed into his trembling hands. Remembers feeling woefully young, impossibly unprepared, completely out of his depth – so why should that be different, for her? How could it be? Granted, she’d been nervous as hell to tell them about it; had shown up at their dinner table wound tight as a spring and clearly with something to say, and she hadn’t worked up the nerve to tell them the news until after the plates had been cleared away: ’Dina’s pregnant.'
