Shen Wei senses Zhao Yunlan’s inhale before he hears his sigh, before he feels Zhao Yunlan move, and Shen Wei silently shifts his leg away as Zhao Yunlan stretches forward to pick up another case file. If Zhao Yunlan looks over at him, Shen Wei keeps his gaze trained on the file in his hands and doesn’t see it.
“Cause of death records,” Zhao Yunlan says as he flips the case file open, the same way he’d said acid composition notes for the last one, and trident wound autopsies for the one before that. Shen Wei hears him tuck his lollipop into his cheek, the click of it against his teeth. “It’s from ten years ago, I’m surprised it was allowed to lapse. My old man would’ve still been in charge then.”

Shen San was just a man. Under the plum tree, his tombstone told a little story that perhaps only a broken-hearted poet and an enlightened-hearted monk could decipher. The characters engraved next to his name were in a shape as beautiful as Shen Wei's calligraphy flowing from brush to paper.
This was the first time that Shen Wei had come here with a different appearance than Shen San had known.
"I have little time left but I decided to start another life in the human world, it's been a while since the last time. In your time, you said to me 'you are young but completely adult, so what?' before you were sure that I was much older than you had imagined.”
About making a different decision this time, the last time, the only person Shen Wei had to ask for advice was Shen San - even though his words could only exist in Shen Wei's heart....

Sitting in the armchair by the window, he turned the page of the book, paying attention to the notes that the previous owner had made on the edges. It was curious to him how one could get to know a person just by reading what they chose to highlight and comment on in the text of a work. Shen Wei had several books that had once belonged to that same person. It was like an intimate friend he had never met. Maybe that person was already dead, but that thought didn't make Shen Wei sad or happy. It was just the fortune of being human. Shen Wei didn't know if that fortune now also belonged to him. After all, part of him was human too.

The girl who said her actual name was Qiuyue Zhao huffed leaning forward on her elbows. These old farts were getting on her nerves. "Come on is it not that obvious, this strange-looking watch on my wrist, the way I know things I shouldn't know, my truck equally weird-looking phone that looked like it came out of Star Trek and knowing where you were going to go. How is that not telling you that I'm from the future?"

As if handling glass when it was anything but delicate, Zhao Yunlan cradled it in both hands removing from the cardboard box and bubble wrap. It was lighter than expected not that he could pin point why he thought it would be heavy in the first place. But those thoughts were fleeting, difficult to hold onto in the face of the sheer panic twisting it's way through his stomach at what it could mean. He stared almost entranced and unable to look away from the empty eye holes of the mask in his hands.
