Years of being the Icarus had taught Katya the signs, so when Trixie kept adding to her workload without giving herself reprieve, Katya smelled smoke.

Goncharov laughs at that, a short little bark of amusement, and Katya realizes, the thought dawning fully formed as though it had risen like a ravenous beast from the depths of the sea, I never want him to laugh again.
