At the same time, Ava muttered a similar sentiment under her breath but with a more colourful use of language. Until now, Bucky had kept his head firmly down and remained deep in his thoughts. From the second they stepped out onto that stage, in front of the press, it seemed like he was in a state of shock. But he finally raised his eyes to shoot Walker a stormy look. Whichever one of their reactions was effective, it didn’t matter, because something successfully shut John up.
They rode for a few more minutes in silence. Then, Alexei cleared his throat.
“Walker is right.” He said.
Without lifting his head, Bucky murmured to nobody in particular: “That’s a first.”

For three years, a part of her—the cold, scientific part that analyzed every variable—had treated this as an extended observation. She noted the way Yelena’s attachment to her developed, her cries for "Mommy." She cataloged Natasha’s gradual deprogramming, the slow return of a genuine smile to her face. It was all data. Fascinating, but ultimately irrelevant to the mission parameters.
But the data had coalesced. The observation had yielded a conclusion, one her analytical mind could not refute: the introduction of these variables had irrevocably altered the experiment. The mission was a failure because her own internal chemistry had been compromised. The scientist had been contaminated by her own subject matter. Her heart, a dormant organ she’d long considered little more than a biological pump, had begun to ache. It ached with a fierce, terrifying love.

Yelena pulls her phone out again, this time tapping in Bob’s phone number. She leans on her kitchen counter, waiting whilst it rings. It doesn't take long for him to pick up.
“What did you do?” What an opener, she thought.
“Wow, Bob. Not every time I call you is when I am in trouble.” She mimes being offended despite the fact that Bob couldn't even see her face.
“No but… statistically.” That was fair, actually.
“Do you have the professor's email? Phone number? I need his help.” She crouches down next to Mister Kitty Cat, gently scratching behind his ears.
“Yelena. I'm gonna ask again. What did you do?”
“I got a cat.”
“Oh. That's actually more tame than I was expecting.” Pun intended? Mister Kitty Cat finishes eating, sitting up properly and watching her with those wide eyes that always make cats look kinda high. He probably was. High off tuna.
She stays silent, shifting her weight to fully sit down next to the cat. “He isn't mine.”
“There it is.”

And in order to do that, she needs to protect the rest of her family. The Avengers. Yelena. There are too many unknown variables to consider. Ross. UN. Being on the run from the government. Taking care of the remaining Red Room facilities. Finding Rose.
They have to be careful. There's too much at risk.
