Matt realized that the cut was indeed a cross now. Two perpendicular wounds reopened above his heart to create a mocking testimony of his faith.
He wasn't even sure if God could save him from Muse now.

Now the only thing he could think of was the burning man beside him. The emptiness that his heartbeat should have filled. The silence. But it was still somehow so loud. With the sound of his muscles contracting one last time, not ready for their permanent slumber. The sound of his flesh searing into himself. The flames themselves singing their own tune. -
