Summary
What the hell had happened?
It had been such mundane Tuesday. Shikaku had been drowning under paperwork, he and Yoshino were fighting, and Shikamaru was complaining about all his useless D-ranks.
And suddenly, he was back twenty years in the past. This had to be an elaborate genjutsu of some sort. It had to be.
Nara Shikaku is flung back two decades in the past in the middle of Third Shinobi War.

All in all, the older Nara thought while he wouldn’t be winning any parent of the year awards, he didn’t do too badly in raising his son, and liked to think he and Shikamaru had a decent relationship.
That was until recently.
When his whole world turned to shit.
For the first time in his life Shikaku was at a loss as to how to talk to his son.

Summary
“You’ve killed.”
The words are mostly a neutral observation, certainly not said with any sort of fear or disgust, but maybe, although it might only be a projection of what Shikaku hopes to find there, with a faint hint of pride.
He swallows back the stirring in his gut at the flashing memory of the Ame boy’s flesh under his blade.
“Yes.”
His father nods.
“Good.”

I rewatched that tiny scene in the Naruto OG anime of Shikaku getting drunk instead of following Shikamaru’s performance during his Chuunin exam, and I had to write a whole fic about the older gen InoShikaChou's first Chuunin Exam.
A piece about family pressure, war, and child soldiers.
