The man lowered himself to one knee before Nie Huaisang, piercing the ground with his sword tip to hold it upright, and his other hand forming a fist to clasp over his chest. “On my honour as a knight of Yunmeng Jiang, I, Sir Jiang Wanyin, pledge to fulfill my promise to you. Should I fail, my life is in your hands to do with as you will.”
A ray of sunlight lit up the man from his nose upward, highlighting a lock of hair that nearly hung in his eyes. Nie Huaisang stepped closer to him, reaching out to tuck the lock behind Jiang Wanyin's ear. He was unable to resist the urge to touch his face, moving to cup his jaw in both hands and lift it so their eyes could meet.
“So mote it be, Jiang Wanyin,” he promised. “And you may call me Nie Huaisang.”
