Summary
Algebra in general had only been a relatively recent invention. Sure, way back then, people were unfathomably smart. But anything more complex than arithmetic was reserved solely for specialists and intellectuals of the era.
So then, why wouldn't that be the case in Re:Zero?
Historically, "math" and "tedium" often gone hand in hand, given the lack of modern symbolic representation. In fact, negative numbers were only a thing in 200 BCE - roughly 2800 years after records of earliest civilization.
