Callum wants to learn magic, and, sulking around the High Mage's office, he gets a teacher that no one knew was there.
Aaravos has been waiting a very long time for someone to look into his mirror besides the dragon who put him there. He wasn't expecting it to be a child, much less a child with no magical training and a heart as pure as the driven snow, but he'll work with what he is given. The two things he isn't running out of are time, and patience.
But Aaravos is not immune to compassion, and the person he was once was not a monster. He may yet be that person again.
He doesn't need to be the bad guy.

Then again, lots of episodes lack many scenes showing crucial moments from both the heroes and villains, and their respective allies and friends throughout Xadia and the human realms; especially the kingdoms we only heard of- Neolandia, Del Bar and Eevenere, due to being much less than 28 instead of 50 minutes or more.
